red dot awards

The red dot awards for communication design are beginning another round this year. Winners will have their work displayed in the red dot museum for a year. They are inviting designers, advertising agencies and the like to submit their work. This year they have have added a little credibility to their Packaging Design category, by appointing 3 specialists in the field, though they don’t name names. Registrations can be made on-line at www.red-dot.de/registration. The registration deadline is 22 June 2007.

Adidas Y-3 red dot award

Former winners include NEUE DIGITALE GmbH for their work on the Adidas Y-3 web site (above) - visually nice and some nice interface ideas, but an absolute nightmare to navigate; and STUDIOHEINZ (below). I’m not quite sure where the red dot awards fit into the grand scheme of awards. Would welcome feedback. What’s the award that designers really covet?

I think most awards are the same - usually just an opportunity for those in the industry to pat themselves on the back. Ultimately the public decides. e.g., a successful ad campaign. The only useful aspect of awards is that they do showcase work that might otherwise not be brought into the open.
