Friendly Fire Exhibition

The inimitable graphic designer (aka type-god) Jonathan Barnbrook will hold his Friendly Fire UK exhibition at the Design Museum (June 15 to October 10), and will be a great opportunity to see the development of his work, especially in experimental typography. If you’ve been in a coma for the last decade (the only plausible excuse for not having seen his work), then take a trip, via a click, to his studio’s website. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear than Barnbrook is married to a font (now there’s a thought), such is his love affair with type - and it really comes through loud and clear in his work. There aren’t many who can’t break the “rules” of type so flagrantly and yet get away with it. His work is not about consolation, or about making us feel cosy; rather it’s a call to action, a bugle-call to wake up from our slumber/apathy.

This is not just about commercial activity, we have a strong view of the change in the political landscape. There will be a section with Hirst’s monograph, as well as some films with a mixture of political and general work. Film is a very valued form of communication. We will be showing all the typefaces we have produced and the exhibition will show how there was a big change in graphic design since technology came into it.
