Paintings of the week
It has been a long time since I did this. I will make every effort to post a Painting of the Week every week from now on. Here are my favourites by the Japanese, New York resident artist Kenichi Hoshine.
“Untitled” - Graphite, Charcoal, Acrylic Emulsion, Tea and Gesso on Paper (28″x23″)
What do you think?

Great idea to post your favourite paintings of the week.
Personally, I’m not so keen on these, although the clarity of the ear on the first one is interesting. Without it, I’d have no idea what it was.

Tea?? Do those paintings really contain tea? Is that common? I like the style of this artist, but I think I’m not too keen on many of his choices of subject. The texture is fascinating and the colors blend together very nicely in his other works.

Yes, that’s interesting that by defining a single element, the whole is perceived. Me too, I’d find it abstract if it weren’t for that ear.

I’ve used both tea and coffee, and know of other artists who do. Not sure how widespread it is, but it’s not uncommon. Tea is good in water colour paintings too, as a wash. I sometimes used coffee with water colour paints in my Architectural Illustrations - good for rendering sandstone, etc.
Just remember not to drink it after

I like the second one. It’s like a shallow depth of field in a photo. Are you joking about the tea and coffee??

hmm.. .I never used coffee nor tea for my paintings, I did use an olive oil though.
I actually quite enjoyed the washed effect of those paintings. Look forward to your weekly collections.
