Illustration of the Week

Perhaps I should rename this weekly post to “Art of the Week”, or something like that. Any suggestions?

Well, here is my Illustration of the week, by Bulgarian-born Illustrator Christo Bakalov. Some of his illustrations are even available under the creative commons licence. I’m a big fan of his style and, the often, black/dark humour that inspires his illustration.

Christo Bakalov

An interesting chap: born 1969 in Bulgaria, he now works in Marseilles in the South of France (what a wonderful place that is); among other things, he works on the American monthly magazine, Foreign Policy, that has published pieces by the likes of Noam Chomski.

  1. Wow, those are digital? The texture is beautiful! I find it hard to bring realistic looking textures like this into my work. He uses those gradients so subtly, too, I didn’t even realize it until he said so in his comment to you.

Maybe, you could call it Eye on Art? It should be something with “art” so that it encompasses everything you watch, and by eliminating the “of the week,” there’s no need to limit yourself :) I do enjoy these posts!

  2. Eye on Art. I like it. Thanks, Lauren.

  3. Or maybe, for fun, I on Art. Heh, so long as you give your impressions

  4. What and amazing talent he has. He should do illustrations to Franz Kafka books.

    Re: title. How about
    - Art Dose or Weekly Dose Of Art
    - Art Fix or Art Fix Of The Week
    - Creative Fix
    - Art Snippet or Art Snippet Of The Week

If I were to run smth similar on my blog, I would’ve called it Art Bits :-)

Some great ideas. I like I on Art and Creative Fix.
Illustrations for Kafka books. Great idea. Perfect. There is something “sinister” about these illustrations. That’s got me thinking about some other titles he could could illustrate for:

    Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World
    George Orwell’s 1984
Karel Čapek’s Rossum’s Universal Robots (RUR)
    José Saramago’s Blindness

    Inspiring comments. Thank you.
