Graphic Design Inspiration and Sharing
Tara over at the Graphic Design blog in a recent post, Graphic Design Cookbook, suggested,
Maybe there is a way we could all start a shared design elements gallery on Flickr or similar image gallery (cool headings, navigation, folios etc) ?…or do you prefer to have your own personal resource? What do you think?
And, as Randa Clay is not one to hang about, she kindly set-up the Flick Inspir Group, a place to share your own Graphic Design, and a forum for discussion.
I’m also considering taking-up on Tara’s suggestion, and creating a web site devoted to this; not to replace the Inspir Group, but as a compliment to it. If there’s enough interest, then I’ll create a site wherein users can upload work, comment, discuss, tag, etc. What do you think?
To join the Flickr Inspir Group visit the link, make a request to join, and Randa will confirm. This could really be a great Inspiration resource.

Just joined up. It’s a nice idea for a group showcase and I see you’ve been giving critiques already. Great stuff.

great to see you there. Yes, I really enjoy this kind of thing, so when Tara got it started and Randa followed up by creating the Group, I was keen to contribute. I find that I learn the most from responses to my own critiques. For example, I suggest, why don’t you try such and such, and the creator of the piece replies, it wouldn’t work because….It’s this kind of thing I love to be involved in.
I look forward to seeing some more of your work and comments. personally.

It’s a fantastic idea, but (not wishing to rain on anyone’s parade) something similar’s already been done: http://www.designrelated.com
Having said that, I’m happy to sign up to the flickr group and see what I can find to share!

Thanks for the link Paul. Yes, it’s a good site. Perhaps we could all build something better?
Really like the design of your blog, by the way.

Thanks!
I’ve got some great domains in my portfolio that would be very suitable for a site like designrelated… Can’t find anything pre-written that could be used, so somebody (not me until my workload’s eased) would need to code something from scratch.
I wonder whether we could do something using a multi-user WordPress setup?

I think you’ve hit on something there. Wordpress MU might just the perfect starting point; add to that some AJAX along with the effects in the Mootools or jQuery library, and it could be quite a site. If I were to start coding (and like you I can’t start on it right now), would you be willing to get involved? We’ll be the FaceBook of the Design world

Hi
Thanks for the mention
I’d be interested in helping out too. Not too hot with the coding but happy to help with marketing, blogging etc.

Just a thought but my original idea was that the site would be for design elements - ie. cool navigation, typographic headings, page numberings (ie the small details) This could be away of making things diffferent, rather than just showing a whole project. What do you think?

Perhaps the site could cover both areas: design elements and full projects; a resource, forum, and showcase. The Design Elements is a great idea. There’s not too much on the web that covers this area in an comprehensive and organised fashion. I’ll give it more thought. And thanks for your offer of help–and for the initial inspiration, of course.

Hopefully I’m not too late with pitching in, but if I can help with anything (coding or design or some brainstorming) I’ll be very happy to contribute to the Designers site. I’m already grateful to Tara for her idea and Randa for following it up with the Flickr group. That’s what Web 2.0 is all about, isn’t it? The community and not the cool shadows and round corners.

I’m in too, of course. I’m interested in collaborating with you all in whatever way works best. I like Tara’s original idea, and I think having that as a category of whatever ends up coming of this is also good. I’d like to see all kinds of work, but focusing on the details as she suggested is a good idea.
