Creative Fix
Creative Fix will be a regular round-up feature. I’ll be listing and commenting on my favourite blog posts, stumbles and bookmarks. Here’s my Creative Fix for June 2007:
Website that caught my eye:
This is a beautifully designed Flash web site; this kind of thing has been done a lot before, but this one is particularly worthy of mention:
Architecture:
LandMark Houses, an Architectural Housing Project set in the Cotswolds (UK).
A complete showpiece village of landmark new homes by some of the best architects in Britain, and the world, is about to be built in the Cotswolds.–The Sunday Times
Typography:
15 Years of Type for Independent Minds Travelling Exhibition. There are no Exhibitions on right now, but you can follow the Place-name links at the bottom of the page for some typographic inspiration. Next venue is Stockholm in the autumn, and then Belfast in the new year.
Typography and Web Advertising, a great post on Digital Web Magazine.
So why is so much advertising, including web advertising, so skippable? Partly, I think, because advertisers make the mistake of thinking of the audience as viewers rather than targets.
On a similar theme, see Marc Rapp’s piece on Banner Ad’s.
Illustration:
Some wonderful Drawings, Illustrations and Collages from Raquel Aparicio:
Web Development:
jQuery used to be a little thin on documentation. They’re making up for it, and have some great examples of jQuery in action. jQuery is now my favourite JavaScript Library. There are some great tutorials demonstrating just how easy jQuery is to implement.
Other:
Photoshop Tutorial. Step by step instructions on how to easily improve any photo (adjusting the white and black points and more); you’ll be surprised at how this will improve the colour and clarity of your photos.
What have I been doing?
Most of my time right now is devoted to building a Czech-language web site, working on a poster and catalogue layout for a Clothing Company; building a web site and blog for a Japanese Design Agency; working on a proposal for an Intranet CMS; and, in between times (for fun(?)), writing some JavaScript to enable users to select their own font family on the fly and have it persist with Cookies…is that really fun? And, when I have time, I’d like to do a kind of Google Notes Mashup whereby my Google notes are displayed on a page within the blog (a Google Notes Feed, if you like). However, that will have to wait; lots of work to finish first. I’ve recently joined FaceBook, so be sure to add me. You can import your blog feeds into FaceBook Notes–another way to promote your content, and ensure that no-one misses out.
Let me know what you think. Feel free to comment on your own June favourites too. Oh–I almost forgot to mention–thanks to Vivien at InspirationBit for the Creative Fix nomenclature.

Excellent links.
I love the illustration you posted, it’s quite different to the others on the page though, it’s my favourite by far.
I’m off to fix my photos….

Yes, it’s not quite representative of her work. Some of it is dark, but I love her style. The illustration above resembles a still from an animated film. I like the perspective and colour in this piece.
If you find that PhotoShop tutorial works for you, then let me know; I’d like to post some before and after photos.

What a great round up, John. And what a pleasant surprise - deciding on the feature’s title from my suggestions - thank you.
Wow, you’re one busy person. When do you find time for all those projects? How many hours a day do you usually sleep?

Thank you. Will you be charging royalties for use of the name?
This month is particularly busy. These days 3 or 4 hours sleep a night; but I’m not complaining.
Thanks again for “Creative Fix”.

Of course I’ll be charging royalties for use of Creative Fix - I’m expecting only top quality posts under this title, only Crème de la Crème of creative Web. One mishap and you’ll be stripped of the privilege using Creative Fix name
3-4 hours of sleep - you’re almost like me there pal. I can’t complain either, c’est moi vie

Très gentil.
That’s true so long as, “Nous devons vivre pour dormir”
Ah, j’ai lu de toi sur Blogging Pro. Vraiment impressionnant.

What do you mean? What and how will you be trying to fix it for me there?

Sorry. I misread your “…ALL about me” comment; an indication that it’s time to for me to sleep, I think.
